Shark alarm at Bondi beach

Morning swimmers and surfers were told the get out of the water at Bondi beach after a shark was reportedly spotted.

An alarm sounded at the beach, triggered by surf life saving teams.

Tourists and locals alike were told to leave the water around 10.15am today.

Large schools of fish could be seen just off the beach near Icebergs from the news chopper.


Large school of fish off shore may have triggered a false alarm, or possibly attracting larger fish predators.

Despite the alarms some surfers remained in the water while dozens stood on the beach line looking out to sea.

Following the storm predictions overnight, the NSW Bureau of Meteorology has now sent out a warning for Sydney and surrounding areas.

Secure lose items, move your car away from trees, keep pets in a safe place and consider travel plans, as the storms roll in over the next few hours.

The warning is urgent and suggests Sydney will be hit by hailstones, heavy rain, strong winds and lightning.

The Sydney based BOM of NSW says there is a severe thunderstorm warning for the region, including large hail and flash flooding.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds over the next several hours,” the statement said.

ABC News reports a man was killed in a lightning strike today near Dubbo. A 53-year-old man died after being struck at Geurie Racecourse about 2pm, during a community event in the town.

The storms could interrupt major events tonight, with the Sydney Opera House hosting the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games from 7.30pm. Whilst Homebush is currently hosting the X Games, with organisers pushing the start time back 2-hours forward in anticipation of the incoming storms.

A trough is interacting with a humid airmass to produce thunderstorms across much of the state.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds over the next several hours in parts of the Hunter, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes and Upper Western districts. Locations which may be affected include Mudgee, Orange, Moree, Narrabri, Walgett, Dubbo, Parkes, Coonabarabran and Lightning Ridge.

Locations which may be affected include Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Katoomba, Goulburn and Yass.

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid on 131 388, or Endeavour Energy on 131 003 or Essential Energy on 132 080, as shown on your power bill.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don’t walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

Sydney Flooding emergency underway – There are reports that 67mm of rain has fallen in Penrith in just 30 minutes.

That’s more than the entire October average for the area in jus one short downpour.

A huge storm is coming into Sydney metro area right now. With Western Sydney set for massive rainfall and storms. Suburbs closer to the CBD of Sydney are also facing huge rain downpours and possible deteriorating conditions.

A detailed warning has only just been issued by the Weather authorities, with BOM NSW saying a huge storm is incoming and to expect flash flooding in and around Sydney.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 7:20 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Camden, Penrith and Picton.
These thunderstorms are moving towards the south.
They are forecast to affect Appin by 7:50 pm and Richmond and Campbelltown by 8:20 pm.
Heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding is likely.
