Ferry McFerry Face is the new Sydney Ferry name, after a public vote
Meet Ferry McFerry Face, the new BoatY McBoatFace of Australia.
No this is not an April fools joke.
After a public campaign asked for a name for Sydney’s new fleet of Sydney Harbour Ferry boats, Ferry McFerry Face wins.
In July 2016 the New South Wales government announced a public initiative and the Sydney media were already priming for the name.
“This is an Australian first, we’re opening up naming suggestions to the public and six of those names will take a place in Sydney’s history forever,” Transport Minister Andrew Constance told the Sydney media at the time.
18-months later, the Minister is proclaiming his new vessel.
“Given Boaty was already taken by another vessel, we’ve gone with the next most popular name nominated by Sydneysiders,” Constance told ABC News Sydney.
“Ferry McFerryface will be the harbour’s newest icon, and I hope it brings a smile to the faces of visitors and locals alike.
15,000 Sydneysiders suggested names for the Sydney Ferry fleet, currently under construction in Tasmania.
In 2015, a similar British competition established the name ‘Boaty McBoatFace’ after a popular online competition. A push on social media ensured hundreds of thousands threw their support behind the name, that at the time was rejected. A small Royal Research ship was named eventually.
