Sydney Carjacking Couldn’t Drive Away because he could drive a manual

A man has failed to drive off in an attempted carjacking, NSW police report, because he had no idea how to drive a manual.

A 47-year-old woman stopped her car at a set of traffic lights, when a man approached from the driver’s side and opened the door.

The alleged carjacker then grabbed the woman’s arm to pull her out of the car. As the victim moved out, the man is reported to have jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to speed off.

However the man was not able to work the manual car as he had no idea how to drive a gear stick and clutch.

Police said the man was able to grab the woman’s purse and flee the scene on foot, but was later found and arrested.

The Ashfield Police Report on the alleged Sydney Carjacking

Police have charged a man following investigations into an attempted carjacking and stealing in Ashfield yesterday.

About 2.45pm 9Monday 19 June 2017, a 47-year-old woman was in her car stopped at a set of traffic lights at the intersection of Norton Street and Holden Street.

Police will allege a man approached the driver’s side of her car and opened her door. He pulled on her arm and told her to get out of the car.

As she got out he jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to drive the car, however, he was unable to drive a manual.

The man reached over and grabbed the woman’s purse that was sitting in the foot-well of the car and ran from the scene.

The woman reported the matter to police at Ashfield Local Area Command and an investigation was commenced.

About 9pm (Monday 19 June 2017) Ashfield Detectives were contacted by police from Sydney City Local Area Command informing them that they had arrested a 41-year-old man for unrelated matters.

While searching him they allegedly located the woman’s purse containing her credit cards and identification.

The man was charged with robbery and assault with intent to take/drive vehicle.

He was bail refused and will appear at Central Local Court today (Tuesday 20 June 2017).
