Breaking News: Boris Johnson intensive care, UK PM is gravely unwell with Covid-19
The British Prime Minister has been moved to intensive care days after developing Coronavirus.
The UK is tonight facing a dramatic escalation in the Covid-19 crisis, with the countries own PM now gravely sick.
The BBC said Boris Johnson has been moved to ICU a day after being admitted to hospital with the virus.
Jonson tested positive to Covid-19 10-days ago.
No 10 statement read: “Since Sunday evening, the prime minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus.
“Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.”
It continued: “The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication.”
The UK was now facing a constitutional crisis with the British system not allowing a Deputy PM who could step up in the absence of the Prime Minister, unlike Australia.
Mr Johnson has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to deputise “where necessary”, a spokesman added.
One commentator said the UK constitution was “murky” when it came to a situation like this.
PM is at the heart of British govt and machine. Raab is deputising but big questions about whether he can act with full authority of the PM. This is a v murky bit of the British constitution.
