Australia in lockdown : Moves to completely lock down the country underway
Breaking News: Australia will essentially be locked down for at least six months, the Prime Minister said today.
In a press conference Sunday morning in Canberra, the PM announced a number of new measures to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus in Australia.
“We will be living with this virus for at least six months, so social distancing measures to slow this virus down must be sustainable for at least that long to protect Australian lives, allow Australia to keep functioning and keep Australians in jobs,” Morrison said.
This including a ban on non-essential domestic travel, to restrict Australians moving between cities, towns and states will be in place.
There would also be significant lockdowns of certain areas, including major cities.
“Non-essential travel should be avoided, going to the shops is something you have to do… but Australians need to exercise their common sense on things they know are not essential.”
Air travel will be impact dramatically, with the government to stop business travel and all non-essential travel across the board.
The government will also implement massive “draconian” rules to lock down parts of Australia.
Areas of Sydney, Melbourne and other cities where there are clear clusters of Covid-19 cases in those areas.
The PM said “more stronger measures will be coming and they will be coming in more localised areas to deal with outbreaks.”
He particularly singled out Sydney.
Scott Morrison said he would talk about the measures with each state Premier in a special national cabinet. These measures will be enforced by local police forces.
The Australian government may shutdown, including Parliament, with emergency measures put in place.
“We’ll have to take more severe responses to deal with (this crisis).”
“There will be need for more extreme measures to be taken.”
