Sydney weather: It will hit over 40C across parts of Sydney today, with extreme heat arriving in the region.

The forecast for Sydney is for extreme heat for the entire city as a high-pressure system brings hot interior air to the east coast.

Air quality in Sydney will also plummet, with bushfires in the Blue Mountains contributing to the blanket of smoke.

5 million people are exposed to hazardous air quality and people should stay indoors.

The western suburbs are likely to exceed 40C and temperatures could be broken.
