Sydney Wind Warning in place for damaging conditions

Sydney Wind: Severe wind warning for New South Wales.

Weather Situation: A series of cold fronts are expected to cross southeastern Australia from Thursday until Sunday, generating a vigorous westerly winds across New South Wales.

There will be heavy snow falls in Alpine areas and risk of damage.

FOR EASTERN PARTS BELOW 1900 METRES: DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h, are expected for the Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Illawarra, Southern Coastal Ranges, ACT, eastern parts of the Central Tablelands (including the Blue Mountains) and high country about the Barrington Tops.

For the Sydney Metropolitan area, Hunter and parts of the northern ranges, DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h, are likely from mid Friday morning.

FOR ALPINE AREAS ABOVE 1900 METRES: DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 80 to 90 km/h are likely, with peak gusts in excess of 120 km/h possible.

Winds are expected to ease from eastern parts of the state during the course of the weekend.

BLIZZARDS are likely for Alpine areas above 1500 metres, possibly lowering to above 1200 metres about Alpine country overnight. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.

Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Katoomba, Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Goulburn, Yass, Canberra and Thredbo.

89 km/h at Nowra at 12:32am Friday

93 km/h at Bellambi at 1:05am Friday

100 km/h at Albion Park at 12:30am Friday

118km/h at Thredbo at 3:53am Friday

The State Emergency Service advises that people should: 
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. 
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. 
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. 
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. 
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500
